How we make cricket bats in Kashmir
GSI has been making cricket bats since 1950. Every bat starts as a cleft of willow and is shaped, pressed and finished in our workshop in Sangam.
Cleft
The willow log is split into clefts, the wedge-shaped blocks each bat is made from.
Drying
The clefts are dried so the wood is stable before it’s shaped.
Pressing and shaping
The face is pressed to harden it. Then the blade is shaped by hand: the edges, the spine and the toe.
Handle and finish
The cane handle is fitted and gripped, and the bat is sanded, stickered and checked before it leaves.
